Save Lives by Spaying/ Neutering

Here are some local resources that may be helpful if you find an animal in need or have a pet who needs services. STAY WILD Rescue has Spay/Neuter services for any dog or cat adopted through us but we do not have the funding or availability to spay/neuter cats and dogs who are not from our rescue.

We love all animals and will take in as many as we can. The sad truth is that there are just too many to help and we can all work together to solve that problem by simply spaying and neutering our own pets.

Links to other organizations who have spay/neuter services are available on this page.

  • SANS Spay and Neuter Syracuse

Our mission is to reduce the pet over-population in Central New York by providing low-cost spay & neuter services for pets that belong to low-income persons, strays, shelter animals & feral cats.

    This will be accomplished by:

Performing high quality sterilization surgeries for dogs & cats to prevent homeless animals from being born

Educating the public about dog & cat over-population, sterilization & responsible animal ownership

Providing exemplary services that are low-cost for financially disadvantaged families by caring, friendly & professional staff.

  • Tompkins County SPCA

The SPCA of Tompkins County provides a low cost spay and neuter clinic to qualified residents of NYS as well as local residents of Tompkins and surrounding counties.

Clinics are typically offered every Tuesday, as well as some weekends. In conjunction with our Spay/neuter partner Shelter Outreach Services, we offer several programs for the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. You may qualify or be eligible for one or more of our low cost programs including those for members of the public who are on a form of public assistance. Appointments are required.

  • Schuyler County Humane Society Spay/Neuter Program

The Humane Society of Schuyler County partners with Shelter Outreach Services (SOS), a mobile spay/neuter veterinary service to deliver high-quality, low-cost spay/ neuter services. Since 2000, the Humane Society has sterilized over 13,000 animals in our community. Shelter Outreach Services veterinarians have collectively spayed over 150,000 animals in five counties.

Due to high demand for this service, priority will be given to income-eligible residents of Schuyler County.

  • Human Society TNR Program

Shelter research and our own experience have shown that a trap-neuter-return (TNR) procedure can stabilize and eventually eliminate cat colonies. In this process, cats are trapped, sterilized, and vaccinated and then returned to the colony. Once a large fraction of the colony has been sterilized, no new cats are born or join the colony and it eventually disappears as the cats age. TNR is a practical, effective, and humane practice and does not place owned cats at risk. This link has more detailed information on TNR and its supporting research.

We rely on our collaboration with the public to trap and deliver cats in for sterilization.

If you are aware of a cat colony and willing to help with TNR, please call the Humane Society of Schuyler County at 607-594-2255 ext. 205. We can provide you with traps and instruction on how and when to set them and can assist with food and shelter. We can also discuss financial arrangements for the surgery.

Feral cats are not generally accepted for adoption. They are wild animals and rarely take well to life with humans.
